Post Operative Instructions

After Non Surgical Treatment

Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be tender for several days as a result of manipulation during treatment and previous condition of your tooth. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm.

Do not chew food on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed and your tooth is covered with a protective restoration provided by your general dentist. You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen. Discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil), aspirin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed.

After Surgical Treatment

For the remainder of the day and until you retire tonight, place an icepack on your face, near the surgical area, for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.

Do not raise your lip under any circumstances.

Do not rinse your mouth anymore today. Starting tomorrow, and for one week, you may rinse lightly with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt per glass). You may brush everywhere except the immediate surgical area.

Eat anything except steaming hot liquids and brittle foods i.e.: crackers, raw cereals, apples, peanuts, etc.

Medications as required. You may take 2 Tylenol every 3-4 hours. If the doctor feels it is necessary, he may prescribe something for the pain and/or infection.

Swelling: Some swelling and possible facial discoloration should be expected, which will reach its limitation in 48 hours. A warm wash cloth or compress placed on the face may be helpful if swelling or discoloration develops.

Bleeding: It is common for a little blood to ooze from the incision. Continuous bleeding should be reported immediately.
